J.H. Kwabena Nketia

Joseph Hanson Kwabena Nketia was Ghana's most internationally acclaimed ethnomusicologist and composer. A prolific scholar, he authored "The Music of Africa" (1974), which remains the definitive textbook on African music worldwide.
Born in Mampong, Ashanti Region, Nketia studied at the University of London, Trinity College of Music, and Columbia University. He served as director of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana and held visiting professorships at UCLA, Harvard, and the University of Pittsburgh.
His compositions blend Akan musical traditions with contemporary techniques, creating works that are both deeply rooted in Ghanaian culture and accessible to international audiences.
Inspiration
Nketia's work was driven by a scholarly passion to document, preserve, and elevate African musical traditions. He believed that understanding the theoretical foundations of African music was essential for its survival and global appreciation.
